Comparison: Different Paths

I have a problem with comparing myself to others and trying to compete with them. I don't usually compare myself to those who are closest to me, rather those who I don't know that much about. They could be acquaintances in my classes or blogger friends on the internet.

While comparing, I look at where they are in their life, what they are accomplishing and their social media. I tend to bog myself down in what others are doing, and instead of motivating myself I get depressed, and doubt where I am in my life.

Instead of comparing yourself to others, compare yourself to where you were yesterday, or even six months ago. Look at your own journey. Have a set point to where you want to go, and then map out how you're going to get there. Google ideas, worksheets and look on Pinterest. I use Tumblr and Pinterest to gather ideas and inspiration. This can be quotes, photos and random musings.

Instead of bringing yourself down by comparing yourself to others, realize that you've come a long way and take that in. If you aren't where you want to be, reevaluate your goals and maybe set smaller goals in order to get to your bigger ones.

What ever you do, don't forget that each person goes down their own path. What may be happening in one person's life isn't what is happening in another. Each person has their own path to follow and there is no right or wrong path. There are some better than others, but never a straight and narrow path to follow.

  2. I tend to compare myself to others too and also look to Pinterest and Tumblr for inspirational quotes to help me through it.

  3. I try and remind myself with the quote "You don't have to be pretty like her, you can be pretty like you". The quote reflects beauty but the word "pretty" can be replaced with anything (smart/successful/funny/skinny/etc) . I don't have to be the same as someone else to be great or successful and comparison is just a way to get yourself down.

  5. I compare myself to others all the time! Facebook people (real friends or just people I kinda know) the random girl in yoga next to me that I've never seen but has a badass handstand two minutes into class... etc. I feel you on the comparison thing! It's hard not to do in an age when everyone puts everything out there. But you're totally right- one must aim true and follow through for their own personal journey. Thanks for the reminder!

  13. This is so great, and so important! We've gotta follow our OWN arrow and stay focused and dedicated to our own journeys. It's far too easy to get caught up in everyone else's! (I wrote about arrows + inspiration here: http://cominguprosestheblog.com/just-focus-and-keep-aiming/)
