Healthy Habits: Running

Y'all I used to hate running. My high school sweetheart was in cross country, and every time he would try to get me to go running I would just stop after about 100 feet. He literally could not get me to run.

I decided to start running this summer because I didn't want to drive all the way over to campus just to work out or pay for another gym. I thought I would hate it, but I've actually started to love it. Here are some of my running essentials and tips.

1. Tennis Shoes: I love these because they're so fun!

2. Nike Run App + Armband:  My hands get sweaty and swollen when I run, so I like having the armband to hold my phone! This app tracks your runs, and lets you know how far or long you've run without having to look at your phone!

3. Headband: In order to keep the sweat off my face, I wear this cute headband that basically matches everything!

4. Workout Gear: Right now my favorite places to go are Marshalls, Old Navy and Kohls! Buy the shorts, top and bra here!

5. Playlist: I have a great playlist, but believe that running playlists are personal because some songs may motivate you more than others!

Running Tips:

1.When you start running it's going to be difficult. Run intervals instead of trying to run as fast as you can.

2. Listen to your body. Don't force yourself to run more than you feel up to, but that also means if you feel like you can push it you should!

3. Hydrate! Drink plenty of water before and after your run!

4. Warm up and cool down for each run. Take the time to stretch as well. It will help your muscles stay relaxed and not cramp up!

5. Remember this is good for your body, and don't run just because you think you have to.

Do you like to run? What are some of your favorite songs to run to?

xoxo

  1. I am definitely not a runner but I have been getting back into going to the gym almost every weekday.
I love F21 and VS for workout clothes, also Nike and Lulu.

  2. I, too, have hated running for most, if not all, of my life. I think my problem has always been that I see other people running long distances effortlessly and I'll try (and fail) to mimic them. Struggling to find my "right" pace. Great post!

  4. I've been using the 5k Runner app this summer to try to get myself into running. It worked for a little while but then I broke my toe and I haven't run since!! I'm gonna finish the app one day, hopefully!!

  6. I've always loved running (it's been my default workout for as long as I can remember) but there are still days it is hard to get myself to get out the door. I really have found running is just as much of a mental exercise as a physical exercise. Loving your tips girl <3

  8. Great tips! I used to hate running too but now 3 years later and it's a necessity for me! I'm 4 months out from foot surgery and working my way back up to 5-7 mile runs!

  9. I recently just got back into running, and it's been so hard. I was never really into it to begin with, but after just a few weeks, I can tell that I'm already starting to find my stride. It's so hard with it being so hot though. I get out of breath so quickly. Having a playlist is my favorite! I love running to music. I know I wouldn't enjoy it as much otherwise.

  10. I really wish I could run. I literally can't. I just can't. I've tried... I have issues with endurance because of having fibromyalgia, so I can't really do super crazy cardio. I've heard it's the best therapy, though!

  11. My boyfriend and I are starting to train for a half marathon after just getting back in to running in the last 6 weeks! It's such a good way to blow off steam. I'm glad I'm not the only person who heads to Marshalls for workout gear. I've bought some of my favorite go-to workout pieces from there. I love Old Navy's active line as well, and it's always on sale!

  13. I have never been a runner and don't know that I will start anytime soon, but your tips make it seem a lot more attainable! I think I get caught up on the fact that I have to run like 3 miles my first time and that's just not realistic.

  17. I am not a runner, but I have definitely tried to pick it up a few times and failed. I like the idea of running intervals instead of just running as fast as you can, think I'll have to give it a try again!

  19. I did track & field from when I was 4 to 15. I'm not in shape anymore, but I've been wanting to start back running. I've been playing a lot of tennis lately and with all this hot weather, I definitely need to invest in a headband. Thanks for the tips!

  20. I have always avoided running, but want to start running outside while it's nice out so I'm definitely going to try out those tips. Another great place to get workout clothes is H&M!

  21. I love that headband and these are such great tips! I always struggle to stay hydrated, I hate carrying a water bottle! Now that winters coming I want to get back into running, so this is perfect! :)

  22. I am not much of a runner. Every time I try to get into it, I go on one run and then feel sore for a week!

  23. I did varsity cross country and track all through high school too, so I feel your pain. It can get to be so difficult to be motivated to just up and run! My favorite running shoes have always been Oasics though, and I have a super fun Workout playlist on Spotify that's full of great running jams!
