How Do You Want to Live Your Life?

With graduation comes about a million questions, and about 60% of them scare me. Making decisions this summer and within the next couple of months is going to be hard, and I know that there will be compromises made.

One thing I don't want to do is make decisions out of fear.  I don't want to stop myself from moving across the country because I'm scared I won't make friends, or that I'll be too far away from my family. While discussing the future with one of my good friends, I said "I'm scared of moving, but I don't want to live my life making decisions based on fear"

I want to live my life acknowlegding my fears, but never letting them rule my life. Fear is healthy, but don't let it rule your decisions.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said "Do one thing everyday that scares you." This may mean killing a bug (I know, I hate doing it too), cooking for yourself, telling someone how you really feel or writing a powerful blog post.

When we allow fear to rule our decisions, we miss out on life. This isn't me saying that you can't be afraid, because right now I'm terrified of graduation, leaving my friends and family as well as the prospect of finding a job. But I'm not letting it stop me from living my life.

Within the next four months I am going to be making a lot of decisions, but today I've decided not to let fear rule them. I will make my decisions based on opportunities for growth, and can not wait to see where I go and the difference I will try to make!

When have you decided not the let fear rule your decisions? How do you conquer your fears?

xoxo

  1. Having confidence in myself that I can push through gives me a huge boost! Fear is definitely something that has stopped me from approaching a person and a big opportunity. Lovely post!

  2. This is awesome - my goal this year was to do all the things I have always been afraid of doing, so I started a blog and committed to going abroad.

  3. Graduating can be scary! For 22 years of your life everything is pretty much planned out for you on a large scale and all you have to do is fill in the blanks (aka where you want to go to college, what you want to major in, if you study on Thursday night or go out) and suddenly the whole story is blank after graduation. For me...I was an anxious mess. A year after graduating I finally feel like it's coming together (:

  4. I've been graduated for a year now and it took awhile to get completely comfortable with life after college but things finally seem to be falling into place. It's a big leap but I think you will do well after graduation especially in the working world since you have lots of internship experience.

  5. Love this post, Ash! I've been able to get over my fears because I just know what's right for me. If I truly want to do it, then I will. I know I'll end up regretting it later if I don't!

  6. Loving this post! I've actually tried to move towards the things that scare me! If I'm slightly afraid of an opportunity, it's usually just what I need to move onwards and upwards!

  7. Love the post! I will be facing this dilemma in a year and I'm trying to move out of the country! What I have been doing is researching things in different areas and trying to approach it as if I was made for this! Someday it works! lol Good Luck to you and don't be scared. Just like you made the friends you have in college...you will make new one and the old ones can always come to visit.

  8. I felt the same way before I graduated! Fear is so overwhelming. So glad that you're being proactive about confronting your fears head-on. I was often fearful of pushing the limits as far as my physical fitness was concerned. I stayed in my comfort zone (running-wise) for a long time until I started to increase my distance a little further as the weeks went on - now I'm training for a half marathon! I think you've written about this before, but SMART goal setting definitely worked for me!

  10. Follow your heart, and it will lead you in the right direction! Just remember, you can choose a certain path for the first year....then turn around the second year and choose another path. There's nothing wrong with that!

  11. This was a powerful post, I hate to admit it but I base a lot of my decisions off of my fear. I need to stop that, like you said, acknowledge my fears but don't let them rule my life.

  12. This is such a great post! It's so hard not to let fear get in the way of decisions. I was nervous to start putting my writing out there more often then I started and haven't looked back. Some of the best decisions happen when you're a little nervous about them...but do it anyway.

  13. I always follow my heart. Sometimes it's really hard, but I always believe it'll result in the best outcome! Also, fear is normal... but we can overcome it!

  14. For the longest time, I listened to my fears...if something made me second guess a decision because I was intimidated, I listened to the "second guessing" and moved past it. Now, if there's a little voice that tells me "no," I know that I HAVE to do it - conquering fear means you're moving forward and growing, and right now, that's all I care about.
