Back to College// What to Buy Once You're There

One of my tried and true tips when moving to college or anywhere really is to wait to buy certain things until you get there. This way you end up buying exactly what you need instead of too little or too much.

Here is my list of things you should wait to buy:

Powerstrips
Extension Cords
TV Cables
Internet Cables
Toilet Paper
Paper Towel
Bathroom extras (Toothbrush holder etc)
New hair products and shower products
Lamps
Hangers

Now if you find a really good deal on one of these, I would grab it! But keep in mind that you may end up buying more, or not using them!

What did you end up buying when you got to college? Was there anything you forgot?

xoxo

  1. When I moved to Illinois for grad school I had to buy pretty much everything instead of bringing it from home, but now that I have everything from previous years stored there I think your list will be more than enough to remember what I need! :)

  2. I can never pass up a good deal! All of these things are definitely ones I would wait to buy if I was having to go far away to school!

  3. This is a good tip. It's also helpful to speak to your roomies beforehand to make sure you don't buy doubles!

  4. This is great and I totally agree, but I would recommend buying toilet paper first--or at least bringing a roll! I just moved my boyfriend into his new apartment and we didn't have toilet paper...we ended up having to walk all the way to the leasing office to use their bathroom and that was no fun!

  5. I agree with Emma - TP is a must! Kitchen supplies too.

  6. I think it's best to wait for most items- especially those that require a specific size or length. I think you should definitely bring cleaning wipes or cleaning spray with paper towels to make sure things are clean before you move stuff in. Also toilet paper is a must!

  7. I think it's definitely better to wait for certain items but I'd bring some TP, cleaning supplies, and a shower curtain (if in a suite style dorm or an apartment) the first day among other things.

  8. I definitely think it's important to check out your exact living situation before buying some pieces. It's just easier!

  9. Definitely agree about the bathroom extras (especially freshman year). We bought a soap dish and a toothbrush holder and didn't use either of those lol. I'm not sure what we were thinking!

  10. I ended up buying more decor .. I didn't think I was going to have enough room for it but the room was lacking so much interest until we added a rug and curtains! Love your list!

  11. I ended up buying way more hangers and extra dorm room decorations. I couldn't bring too much since I flew to school so I actually went a little overboard at Target!

  15. Yes to all of the power cords! You never know how many, what length, and what the dorms will "let" you have!

  17. You're right- you should definitely wait to buy all of the cables! It's difficult to know what lengths to buy until you see your room's layout!
