Back to College// Best College Advice

So to end the Back to College series I thought I would write down a couple of pieces of advice for incoming freshman and anyone else who may be in college.

Say Yes// To a concert, a fun outing at midnight and to taking a leadership position in an org. I said yes to something my freshman year, and ended up founding an org, traveling to different countries, and making countless memories!

It's Okay to Lose Friends// The friends you have freshman year may not be the friends you graduate with. Time, different goals and busy schedules tend to show you who's in it for the long haul.

Class Matters// You're not only there to have fun, but to learn as well. This may not be a popular belief, but I have learned so much in the past three years because I went to class. I'm the first one to admit I will skip a class to sleep, or to attend something else. But don't make it a habit. Even the class outside your major will be helpful one day. Never underestimate what you education can do for you.

Get Involved// College is great, but it's even better when you're involved on your campus. Join Greek Life, join an honorary society, join a club based on your major or one of your interests! I can't tell you how many of my sisters said they wanted to transfer until they pledged, and found something to anchor them to their university.

Know When to Slow Down// Don't just go go go, you won't be able to sustain it. Create a routine that allows you to relax and recharge. Take care of yourself and you won't experience burnout that can harm you and your career.

Your Health Matters// Even if you never worked out in your life, or don't watch what you eat, I would suggest starting. There are hundreds of resources available to you, and you won't regret establishing good habits now. As someone about to graduate, I wish I would have spent more time as a freshman trying to figure out what worked for me! Eat healthy, work out and don't be afraid to splurge a little!

It's Okay To Not Know// It's okay to not know what you want to do, whether you want to study abroad or if you want to be in a relationship. This is such a weird time in our lives, and we don't all have it figured out. Take a deep breath. You'll figure it out, keep trying.

If You Know, Go After It// If you know what you want, don't feel out of place. Go After It. Don't just sit around, seek out opportunities, and don't be afraid to contact someone. Read everything you can get your hands on and don't stop until you get it. We're at this age that responsibilities are so much smaller than they will be in 10 years. Take advantage of it.

Take it In// Don't forget to stop, thank the people around you and appreciate where you are in life. As someone about to graduate, I wish I would have done this more as a freshman and sophomore.

Any advice from grads out there? What resonated with you?

xoxo

  3. Great tips! Honestly, I've learned a lot of those tips this past year the hard way. Losing friends isn't an easy transition, but it happens.

  4. Great advice!
I didn't graduate with some of my friends from freshman year but I made so many more lifelong friends and those are the ones who really matter.

  10. Yes to all of this! I love that you encourage your readers to get involved :) I was very unhappy with my university, but once I got involved with my sorority and a few other organizations on campus, I felt so much pride in where I went to school. When the President of our university hugged me on graduation day, I felt like if he knew who I was, I had actually made an impact on my campus. Best feeling ever!

  12. This was absolutely my favorite post for me of this whole series! I was literally nodding my head the whole way through and felt I had to skim through it- had I read it longer I would have probably gotten emotional since I could relate so much and college is so personal haha!

  14. YES! I just might print this out to give to all of my residents this year. It's SO important to get things in perspective, otherwise it's that much more difficult when times get tough.

  15. Totally agree with your health matters! I kept getting so sick in school cause I was staying up too late and not eating properly. I wish I could tell my younger self to quit those bad habits earlier on in my college career!

  20. These all are really thoughtful tips and things that I honestly hadn't considered until the beginning of my junior year. Now I'm about to start as a senior in the fall, and I'm realizing just how much these ring true. My favorites are it's ok to lose friends, class matters, your health matters, and take it in. Currently struggling with the first and last items in that list, though.

    Best of luck this year!
